Description

Hot cross buns are a delightful treat enjoyed during the Easter season, known for their sweet, spiced flavor and signature cross on top.

Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour: 4 cups (500g)
  • Sugar: 1/4 cup (50g)
  • Active dry yeast: 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet)
  • Warm milk: 1 cup (240ml)
  • Unsalted butter: 1/4 cup (60g), melted
  • Large eggs: 2, beaten
  • Mixed spices: 1 teaspoon each of cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice
  • Currants: 1 cup (150g)
  • Salt: 1 teaspoon
  • Icing sugar: 1 cup (120g)
  • Water: 2 tablespoons

Instructions

  1. Prepare the yeast by combining warm milk and sugar, then sprinkle yeast on top and let it sit until frothy.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients: whisk together flour, mixed spices, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Combine wet ingredients: mix melted butter and beaten eggs, then add the frothy yeast mixture.
  4. Form the dough by pouring wet ingredients into dry ingredients, mixing until a dough forms, then knead in currants.
  5. Let the dough rise in a greased bowl covered with a towel for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
  6. Shape the buns by punching down the dough, dividing it into 12 pieces, and forming round buns.
  7. Let the shaped buns rise again for 30-45 minutes, covered with a towel.
  8. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  9. Create the cross by mixing flour and water to make a paste, then pipe it onto each bun.
  10. Bake the buns for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  11. Prepare the icing by mixing icing sugar with water to create a smooth consistency.
  12. Glaze the buns with icing after they cool slightly.
  13. Serve warm or at room temperature, enjoying them with various toppings.

Notes

  • Use fresh yeast for the best rise.
  • Ensure milk is warm, not hot, to activate the yeast.
  • Knead the dough well for a smooth texture.
  • Space the buns adequately on the baking tray.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 days or freeze for longer storage.
