Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy is a classic comfort food featuring juicy beef patties smothered in a rich, savory mushroom gravy.

Ingredients

  • Ground Beef: 1 pound
  • Plain Breadcrumbs: 1/3 cup
  • Large Egg: 1
  • Salt: 1/2 teaspoon
  • Ground Black Pepper: 1/4 teaspoon
  • Neutral-Flavored Cooking Oil: 2 tablespoons
  • Crimini Mushrooms: 8 ounces, sliced
  • Small Yellow Onion: 1, finely chopped
  • Garlic: 1 clove, minced
  • Tomato Paste: 2 tablespoons
  • Prepared Yellow Mustard: 1 1/2 teaspoons
  • Low Sodium Beef Stock: 1 1/2 cups
  • Cornstarch: 2 teaspoons
  • Water: 1 tablespoon
  • Fresh Parsley: 2 tablespoons, chopped

Instructions

  1. Prepare the patties by mixing ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, and pepper in a bowl and forming into oval-shaped patties.
  2. Brown the patties in a skillet with cooking oil for 4-5 minutes on each side.
  3. Sauté sliced mushrooms, chopped onion, and minced garlic in the same skillet for 5-7 minutes.
  4. Add tomato paste and mustard to the sautéed vegetables and cook for 1-2 minutes.
  5. Gradually add beef stock and bring to a simmer.
  6. Mix cornstarch and water in a small bowl, then add to the gravy to thicken.
  7. Return the patties to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, and let simmer for 5 minutes.
  8. Serve warm, garnished with parsley, alongside your choice of sides.

Notes

  • Choose ground beef with a fat content of around 80/20 for juiciness.
  • Let patties rest for 10 minutes before cooking for better texture.
  • Use fresh ingredients for enhanced flavor.
  • Adjust seasoning to taste before serving.
  • Can be made ahead and reheated for convenience.
