Ingredients
- Potatoes: 1.5 kg (about 3-4 large potatoes)
- Heavy Cream: 500 ml (2 cups)
- Butter: 60 g (4 tablespoons)
- Garlic: 2 cloves, minced
- Cheese: 250 g (about 2 cups) of grated cheddar or Gruyère cheese
- Salt and Pepper: to taste
- Thyme: 1 teaspoon of dried thyme (or 2 teaspoons fresh)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Peel and slice the potatoes thinly, about 1/8 inch thick, then rinse and pat dry.
- In a saucepan, melt the butter, sauté the garlic, then add the heavy cream, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer and remove from heat.
- Grease a baking dish, layer the potato slices, pour cream mixture, and sprinkle cheese. Repeat until all ingredients are used, finishing with cheese on top.
- Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 20-30 minutes until golden brown.
- Let the dish rest for 10-15 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Optional add-ins include sautéed onions, different cheeses, vegetables, spices, or cooked meat.
- Use a mandoline for even potato slices.
- Allow resting time after baking for better texture.
